So I learned another tool
If the question is three-dimensional, the answer probably should be too.
I taught myself a 3D rendering program specifically so I could design the exhibit as a physical environment rather than a collection of disconnected graphics.
That changed the conversation.
Instead of asking a client to imagine what a plan might become, I could build the space virtually, work to scale, position furnishings and displays, test sightlines, and show how the two brands would occupy the same footprint before anyone started fabricating it.
The rendering wasn’t decoration for the presentation. It was part of the problem-solving.
Design it before you build it
Pixels are considerably cheaper to move than exhibit walls.
Working in 3D let me treat the booth like an actual place.
Tables, counters, monitors, displays, signage, seating, traffic areas, and structural elements could all be positioned at scale instead of being discovered one by one during installation.
The environment could be evaluated from multiple angles, giving the client a much clearer picture of what they were approving and giving me a way to catch spatial problems while they were still easy to fix.
The best show-floor problem is the one you already solved on a screen.
Then came the glamorous part
Dimensions. Power. Graphics. Specifications. All the things the rendering conveniently doesn’t plug in.
I wasn’t working for an exhibit house, and I wasn’t pretending to be the person fabricating the structure.
My job was to carry the creative concept far enough that the people who were building it had clear information to work from.
I coordinated directly with the client and the booth-construction company, developing detailed plans and documentation for graphic placement, signage, product displays, power locations, and other production requirements.
A good concept still has to know where the outlet goes.
The environment was only half the design
The booth still had to tell the product story.
IDI and Norplex-Micarta weren’t showing up simply to occupy square footage.
Across the exhibit program, I also developed the in-booth graphics, signage, and product displays used to communicate markets, materials, applications, and real-world product stories.
Backlit graphics, suspended signage, display structures, monitors, and physical samples all became part of the same visual hierarchy.
The architecture got people into the space. The communication inside it still had a job to do.
Seven years later
The assignment stopped being unfamiliar. The questions kept changing.
I designed and refined IDI’s trade show environments over a period of seven years, developing new concepts around changing spaces, priorities, displays, and show requirements.
The useful part wasn’t becoming a trade show booth company.
It was building a process that let me move from creative idea to scaled environment to production detail while working effectively with the specialists responsible for fabrication.

Sometimes the fastest way to expand your capabilities is to get an assignment you don’t already know how to do.
What this says about how I work
I’m comfortable learning the tool the problem requires.
I didn’t learn 3D rendering because I wanted another software icon in the dock.
I learned it because the assignment had moved beyond what a flat comp could answer.
That distinction matters to me. Tools are useful. Curiosity is more useful. And knowing enough to collaborate well with the people who take an idea the rest of the way may be the most useful thing of all.
I don’t need every assignment to arrive inside a capability I already have. Sometimes the assignment is how the capability gets built.
